MR regime accused of double standards on ex-LTTE cadres

25 Oct 2018

UNF MP Mujibur Rahman today claimed that the former Rajapaksa regime has double standards when dealing with former LTTE members. Responding to criticism leveled against the recently approved legislation for reparations by opposition MP Wimal Weerwansa, Rahman said that there should not be double standards when dealing with the issue of former LTTE members. Weerawansa claimed that the government was planning on paying compensation to LTTE cadres who have carried out mass murders and suicide bombings that have killed many Sri Lankan politicians. Rahman claimed that such criticism was not leveled by the likes of Weerawansa when former President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a former LTTE leader Karuna Amman, who is accused of killing many civilians and attacking places of religious worship, as a government deputy minister as well as a vice president of Rajapaksa's political party. "There was no criticism when the former government embraced Karuna Amman, Pillayan and KP (Kumaran Pathmanathan). Former President Rajapaksa released thousands of LTTE cadres in government custody during elections in the North and East. There was no criticism then," the MP charged. Rahman added that the government has now taken steps to compensate each and every person who has suffered due to the war regardless of whether they are Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim or any other as part of the reconciliation process. The MP also slammed moves by certain politicians to promote extremism for petty political gain. "Elections have shown that people even in the North do not accept extremism. At the last election in 2015, even though Sivajilingam contested at the presidential election, the people in the North voted for Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa. A majority of the country have stood against extremism. We should not limit the words 'children of one mother' only to our national anthem, but must practice it as well," Rahman said.
