MS counters MR’s stand on carpentry workshops

09 Jun 2019

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday rejected the position taken by Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa on banning carpentry workshops (wadu madu) and chainsaws. Speaking at an event in Mullaitivu, the President said that he will not change his decision to ban carpentry workshops. Rajapaksa had last week urged the President to reconsider the decision to ban carpentry workshops, saying it will affect thousands of people and that they would lose their livelihoods and have no funds to even buy a coffin. Sirisena said that he came to know that a certain individual had said that people making coffins will lose their jobs if carpentry workshops are banned. The President said that coffins are not made in carpentry workshops and he has no intention of changing his stand no matter what anyone says. Sirisena also commended the public in Mullaitivu and the entire North for protecting the environment.
