MS did not testify at PSC under oath

29 Sep 2019

President Maithripala Sirisena did not testify under oath when he gave evidence before the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) probing the Easter Sunday attacks. Chairman of the PSC and Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ananda Kumarasiri said that the Committee had decided that it was not necessary for the President to testify under oath. “I decided that it would not be necessary to give evidence before the Committee under oath. He is the Head of the State and would be forthcoming with the truth. I did not see any reason why he needed to testify under oath.” President Sirisena testified before the PSC on Friday (20) at the Presidential Secretariat. All other witnesses including Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene, and the then Army Chief General Mahesh Senanayake gave evidence before the Committee under oath. The PSC is expected to hand over its final report to Parliament before 31 October. By Skandha Gunasekara
