MUA, dancer, and more – Nikitha Fernando

27 Jun 2021

By Mahika Panditha    You guys know how much we love makeup over here, so it was most exciting for me to find makeup artist (MUA) Nikitha Fernando (@nikithafernando). I fell in love with her work and immediately wanted to have a chat with her. She has a BSc in Psychology and is currently working on a few projects aside from creating her very own makeup line. She has always been passionate about dancing – Nikitha is super talented.  You can check out her work on her Instagram, she has always put the utmost amount of effort into her work – and you can see it because it is absolutely stunning both in terms of her dancing and talents in makeup. She hopes to open up a rehabilitation center for children who are differently abled in Sri Lanka, and we cannot wait to see where the future takes her! We had the opportunity to speak with her last week, and here is what she had to say!    You are so talented! How did you get into makeup?   Thank you. I was always interested in make-up, especially since I am a performer and we had to put on different make-up looks for events. So last year during the lockdown I started experimenting with different extravagant make-up looks and posting them online. Surprisingly, I got a lot of positive feedback and requests to do more so I kept going.   What has been your favourite look so far and why?   My favourite so far is the Cruella De Vil makeup look. I have always been a fan of Disney movies so I thought why not do looks inspired by Disney villains instead of princesses. Cruella De Vil is such a fashionable and fun character to recreate so I had a lot of fun playing with her colour palette and patterns to create the final glamourised Cruella De Vil makeup look.   What is your favourite product?   My liquid eyeliner is my holy grail. Everyone who knows me knows I always have the sharpest eyeliner wherever I go.    What is one makeup item everyone MUST have?   I’m going to say two items; mascara and eyeliner. Trust me, those two products can really enhance any makeup look because it can really bring out your eyes and make them pop!    You are also a dancer, tell us a little about that.   I have been dancing as long as I can remember. I have also learnt many dance styles throughout the years like hip hop, contemporary, kandyan, jazz, and ballroom. When I was younger, I was never confident enough to compete alone. I would always take part in competitions with a group, so when I was 14 my mom entered me into a dance competition – judged by the famous “Dancing Peacock” Sudha Chandran and Winner of Jhalak Dikhlaja Marischa Fernandes – called “Woogi Woogi 2011” to compete solo. I did it but was very hesitant because there were over 60 participants but I ended up winning first place. In 2019 I auditioned for Derana City of Dance season six in all three categories (solo, duo, and group). I was the only contestant on the show that was competing in all three categories. I made to Top 5 in solo and duo and placed 1st Runner Up in the group category with the Island Stompers Dance Crew.   Any advice for aspiring MUA’s or dancers?   Practice, practice, practice and have fun doing it no matter what, because it’s all about the energy you give off. If you don’t genuinely enjoy what you're doing, how do you expect others to? So it all starts from within you! When you have fun, people have fun!    Aside from makeup and dancing, how do you spend your time?   My little brother and I are huge Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans, so I enjoy watching the new MCU TV series and movies with him. I also enjoy gardening, and I have a little herb garden on my balcony.    Where do you see yourself in five years?   In five years, I hope I will be in a place in my life where I can be very proud of myself.
