Murali vows to continue welfare work regardless of poll outcome

02 Aug 2020

The social welfare work that has been carried out will be continued regardless of the outcome of Wednesday’s general election, Sri Lanka Cricket legend Muttaiah Muralitharan said. Muralitharan noted that he is only a cricketer and not a politician and that he would continue with the social welfare work he has been engaged in the past 22 years. The former Sri Lanka cricketer made this statement in Rosella on yesterday (1) during a public gathering held in support of his brother, Muttaiah Prabhakaran. Prabhakaran is contesting under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) from the Nuwara Eliya District. “President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa invited me to enter politics and contest at the general election. I refused. The President continuously asked me to contest and come forward to serve the people. I am not into politics and I’m not a politician. Hence, I introduced my brother to politics and I believe he would serve the people beyond a traditional politician,” Muralitharan said.
