BY Ruwani Fonseka A 29 year old individual has been arrested today (30) over the murder of the 9 year old girl from Atulugama in Bandaragama. It is learnt that the individual is a relative of the child's father. Speaking to The Morning today (30), Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that the arrestee is a close relative of the child's father and lives 2 houses away. "He is 29 years old and is a drug user. He is a frequent visitor to the child's home as well. The post-mortem report is yet to be received, but we suspect that the child was taken to be raped but as the child was screaming a lot the individual had resorted to killing her. We will have to wait for the post-mortem report to confirm if the child was raped or not," said Thalduwa. He further added that people must be vigilant of their surroundings and ensure the safety of children by not leaving them unattended. The girl, named Fatima Ayesha, had gone missing since 10.00 a.m. on the 27th of May. A complaint had been filed with the police after the girl, who went to a nearby shop to buy some food items, did not return home. Footage obtained from a CCTV camera showed the girl leaving the shop after buying food. Her remains were recovered by the residents of the area the following day (28).
