23 Apr 2021

  • Cabinet paper drafted

  • Joint Ministerial comm. appointed

Ministry of Environment Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe stated that a Cabinet paper has been drafted to convert the Muthurajawela Sanctuary into a National Park at a recent Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) meeting held in Parliament. Dr. Jasinghe also said that a joint committee co-chaired by the Secretaries to the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation, has been appointed, inclusive of all parties responsible for the conservation of the Muthurajawela Sanctuary. It was emphasised at the COPA meeting that subsequent to the paper's approval, it will be essential to appoint an action committee comprising representatives of all relevant institutions and environmental organisations to assist the said joint committee. The COPA drew attention to the fact that the Governor of the Western Province had passed a resolution at the Gampaha District Development Committee meeting on 27 January 2021, regarding over 600 acres of private lands in the Muthurajawela Eco-Sensitive Zone. The legitimacy of this land ownership was discussed at the COPA meeting.
