MV X-Press Pearl disaster: Compensation assessment still ongoing

03 Jul 2021

  • Interim compensation payment yet to be received

  • Marine pollution being monitored and mitigated

By Yumiko Perera   Sri Lanka is yet to receive the first interim compensation claim made concerning the MV X-Press Pearl maritime disaster, The Sunday Morning learnt.  According to Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) Chairperson and Attorney-at-Law Dharshani Lahandapura, the interim claim had been sent to the operator of the vessel through the Attorney General's Department.  However, a final decision would only be made after a thorough assessment and more time would be required for it to be processed.  Meanwhile, the MEPA, along with the subcommittees that had been appointed to assess the damages are still in the process of assessing the ecological impact of the maritime disaster.  Speaking with The Sunday Morning, Lahandapura said: "We are continuing the assessments, and discussions in this regard are commencing too. Likewise, we are also continuously collecting samples, as well as analysing the findings. You must understand that this is a process that requires thorough assessment and time."  Furthermore, Lahandapura went on to say that significant progress has been made on the beach clean-ups, and the pollution is being monitored and mitigated.   Meanwhile, according to the High Commission of India in Colombo, the hydrographic survey ship of the Indian Navy, “INS Sarvekshak”, had successfully completed surveys in three areas off Colombo on 2 July, The Sunday Morning learnt.   The INS Sarvekshak had been deployed at the request of the Government of Sri Lanka on 23 June to conduct a survey in the vicinity of the ill-fated MV X-Press Pearl, and the joint survey operation was co-ordinated between the Indian Navy, Sri Lanka Navy, and National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA).  Several attempts made by The Sunday Morning to get in touch with NARA Director General Dr. Palitha Kithsiri, Ports and Shipping Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, and Merchant Shipping Secretariat Director General Ajith Seneviratne proved futile.
