Namal requests Opposition to assist in Ratwatte investigations instead of spreading rumours

17 Sep 2021

All Opposition parties have been requested by Minister Namal Rajapksa to assist in the investigation over the allegations against former State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoners’ Rehabilitation Lohan Ratwatte, instead of spreading unwanted rumours. These statements were made after Rajapaksa spoke to the media following his visit to the Anuradhapura prison complex yesterday (16). Assuring that the Government will not allow for the trust and safety of the people to be broken, the Minister said that in case such an incident has occurred, proper disciplinary action will be taken. When queried if the CCTV camera footage of the prison were inspected by him, Rajapaksa stated that it was not his place or responsibility to interfere into the investigation of the matter. In response to another question regarding Ratwatte's behaviour while the Human Rights Convention in Geneva is ongoing, Rajapaksa stated the Government does not approve or tolerate such behaviour during any time, whether during the Human Rights Convention or not. “We as a Government do not intend to impress the international audience, instead we want to ensure such incidents are brought to justice as per the law of the country,” clarified Rajapaksa, while refuting claims by the Opposition that the Government was sweeping matters under the rug.
