National Blood Transfusion Service requests the public to donate blood

19 Mar 2021

The National Blood Transfusion Service has requested the people to join in donating blood due to depletion of blood reserves. Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe, the director of the center, said that despite the decline in blood reserves by April every year, the Covid-19 epidemic has made it difficult for people to donate blood. "Our safe blood supply has been maintained at about 12,000 units in the past, but now it has come down to 8,000. The condition has worsened due to covid pandemic. However, all procedures are done in a very safe environment to collect blood," he said. "There is no need to be afraid to donate blood," he said.
