State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle has highlighted the necessity to establish a National Council to coordinate all institutions providing services to the children with special needs in Sri Lanka, the Government said today.
Attending the ceremonial opening of a two-storied building at Jayaviru Sevana Institution in Puwakpitiya on Saturday, the State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control also highlighted the importance of developing a system that can register and regulate all institutions that provide services to the children with special needs. The Government said Jayaviru Sevana is the only state-run institute that provides services to individuals with intellectual disabilities who have been deprived of care and protection of their parents. It is operated under the Department of Social Services. The new two-storied building constructed in this institution has cost Rs. 54 million and has facilities for 50 residents. Currently, this facility provides shelter to some 80 men between the ages of 14 and 65.
