Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda stated that a national fisheries policy related to the fisheries industry will be formulated in the future.
The Minister was responding to a question raised by Parliamentarian Charles Nirmalanathan in Parliament today (22).
The Minister said that this fisheries policy will be presented to Parliament in consultation with the relevant parties and accordingly permanent solutions will be provided to fisheries issues.
About 45,000 people living in the Mannar, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Jaffna districts of the Northern Province are engaged in this profession and about 200,000 families depend on it, the Minister stated.
The Minister further said that Sri Lankan fishing vessels plying in these areas have problems in making a living due to Indian vessels, but further steps will be taken to prevent illegal activities by these illegal Indian fishing vessels in the future.National fisheries policy formulated
