  • Claims TNA behind public agitations
BY Dinitha Rathnayake The Sri Lanka Navy on Tuesday (9) denied recent allegations of land-grabbing taking place at their hands in the Northern Province, and said that protests conducted in the Province against those allegations are often politically motivated with the involvement of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). “There are already camps which are there in the Northern Province, and for national security purposes, these need to be continued. These camps are on lands which either belong to the Government or are privately owned,” stated Navy Media Spokesman Captain Indika De Silva. “Right now, the Government has decided to keep the privately owned lands by giving compensation to the private owners. The problem is that when the Survey Department’s officials go to check these lands, the TNA is agitating the people and sending them to protest. The Government will pay compensation and we will not forcibly take the lands.” Attempts to contact TNA Spokesman and Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran (PC) regarding these allegations proved futile. Video footage aired this week shows protests taking place in the Allaipiddy, Pungudutivu, and Mankumban areas in the Jaffna District, against alleged land grabbing by the Navy.
