The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has planned a special mosquito control campaign mainly targeting construction sites in high risk areas within Colombo, CMC, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Galle, and Matara districts from 25th June to 1st July.
The NDCU said entomological surveys conducted within the year indicted that more than 50% of construction sites were positive for dengue vector breeding.
"The identified breeding sites within them are of larger size (concrete slabs, water storage tanks, wet floors etc) releasing larger numbers of dengue mosquitoes," NDCU added.
NDC said construction site workers and those around the vicinity are at increased risk of contracting dengue, especially with the associated rainy season.
