Nearly 30,000 MT of hoarded sugar seized

29,900 metric tons of sugar was seized by the police yesterday (01) following a raid on private warehouses in Mabola, Wattala, Muthurajawela and Kiribathgoda, Commissioner General of Essential Services, Major General N.D.S.P. Niwunhella confirmed. The confiscated consignments of sugar is planned to be sold to the public through state and private trade outlets at a controlled price.‍ President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had issued an extraordinary gazette declaring emergency regulations formulated as per the section 5 on essential food supply, with effect from the midnight of 30th August 2021, on essentials such as paddy, rice and sugar. Thus declaring that hoarding of such essentials is considered an offence. The commissioner general of essential goods, appointed by the President, has confirmed that further raids will be conducted to ensure the livelihood of the people will not be disrupted and assures to safeguard the interest of consumers by releasing these stocks to the market under a fixed price.
