Nithuli highlights the importance of reading and the creativity it harnesses

22 Aug 2021

By Kusumanjalee Thilakarathna Reading makes a person full, and the creativity it harnesses will help you to do wonders, says 11-year-old Nithuli Bihansa from Ragama. Nithuli is a Grade 6 student from Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena and is an avid reader. She says reading from a very young age inspired her to become a story writer and she went on to publish her debut storybook in 2019. She was a Grade 4 student when she wrote it. Nithuli is also an excellent performer of elocution exams held by the Institute of Western Music and Speech that she was able to obtain full marks in all her exams. Her ambition is to become a medical doctor.  Nithuli, can you introduce yourself to the Little Stars audience?  I am Nethuli Bihansa from Ragama. I am 11 years old and a student of Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena. I am studying in Grade 6. My hobbies include cycling, playing the organ, drawing, reading books, dancing and singing. And I love to play badminton with my sister.  I have a pair of lovebirds as my pets. They are Percy and Dercy. I have a younger sister Binuli Nimansa and she attends the same school. My father is Bimal Shanthapriya and he is a general manager at a private hospital. My mother is Niresha Fernando and she is a housewife.  You seem to have a special interest in elocution. Can you tell us when you have been studying elocution and what helps you to get good marks in the exams?  Yes. I am very much interested in this subject. I started facing these exams back when I was in nursery. In my preliminary exams, I obtained 100 marks and won the all-island prize award for the exam organised by the Institute of Western Music and Speech. Since then I have been following this examination and I was able to achieve the same position every year. My two teachers, Mrs. Shiromani de Silva and my present teacher Mrs. Beryl Ratnayake trained me with great effort and I am thankful to them for all the support extended to me. I have to mention my mother’s support too. She is the one who has been encouraging me to achieve this award from the very first step.  You are a published author too. Can you tell us more about your writing?  I have been reading books from my small days and that is what has been helping me to develop my imagination and it helped me to gain a lot of knowledge. This encouraged me to give it a try and write a book. In 2019, when I was in Grade 4, I published my first story book named Punchi Neena.  I like to read magical stories. This inspired me to write the first book. I have already completed my second storybook too. Unfortunately, we were unable to publish it due to the pandemic.  What needs to be practised if someone needs to improve their writing skills? What is your advice?  You need to read more and more. That’s the only way. It increases your knowledge and also improves your memory. It will help you to improve your vocabulary and grammar. It will also help you to stay focused which is something that you really need when it comes to writing stories. If you are always distracted, it will be difficult for you to finish writing your stories.  What is your favourite subject in school?  From Grade 6 we have 14 subjects in the syllabus. Among these, my favourites are science, maths and history.  What are your hobbies? Can you tell us why it is good to spend time on a hobby?  Other than the hobbies I mentioned before I am also very eager in collecting stamps and seashells. Hobbies are a great way to spend your leisure time and spend it meaningfully. It keeps you engaged and helps you to relax. My favourite times of the day are when I get to do all this fun stuff, especially when I can ride my bicycle outside or dance.  What is your ambition?   I would like to become a doctor. It is not only because doctors can save the lives of the people. Their responsibilities go way beyond that. Doctors help people to manage their pain and identify what is wrong with them or what is affecting their health. If someone has a lifelong disability or an illness, doctors will help them to manage their lifestyles and help them live a normal life as much as possible. I find these things about a doctor’s role highly inspiring. That’s why I believe I wish to become a doctor in the future.  Who are your supporters?   I take this opportunity to thank my parents, my grandparents and my little sister for the support and encouragement given to me all the time. I also want to say how grateful I am to my teachers, including Mrs. Shiromani, Ms. Avril and Mrs. Beryl. They always guide me on the correct path.  Tell us more about your achievements.  So far I have been able to obtain full marks and be one of the all-island prize winners in 10 elocution exams held by the Institute of Western Music And Speech. I was able to face all these exams within 2015-2020.  I was also an official prefect of the Good Shepherd Convent in 2020. I am also a member of the primary school choir. I have participated in many dancing and singing events at school. Before the pandemic, I was able to participate in many school competitions and win medals too. I am also a member of the school debating team.  What is your message to our readers? I would like to encourage everyone to read books. It will help you to become creative and do wonders. After all, we all know that reading makes a full person.
