New Archbishop of Sydney has SL roots

07 May 2021

Kanishka Raffel has been elected as the next Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, making him the first person from a non-European background to hold the position. Mr Raffel was born to Sri Lankan parents in London and his family emigrated to Australia from Canada in 1972. He will be the 13th leader of the Anglican Church in Sydney since 1836. In a statement released yesterday (6), the Archbishop-elect said that he was humbled and somewhat daunted by the responsibility given to him by the Synod. Commenting on Sydney’s multiculturalism which is reflected in the diocese, he said that, “Our diocese reflects the changing ethnic make-up of our cities and values the participation of Australians of all backgrounds in our church life together,”
