Major General Jagath Gunawardena on Monday (1) assumed duties as the new Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.
Major General Gunawardena replaces Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, who retired from the Army a few days ago.
Prior to the new appointment, Major General Gunawardena was serving as the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF).
Soon after assuming duties, the newly appointed Army Chief of Staff paid his first formal courtesy call on Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva at the Army Headquarters.
Lieutenant General Silva had extended his best wishes on Gunawardena’s appointment and wished him good luck with his future assignments.
