Foreign Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said this week that the draft of the new Constitution of the expert committee led by President’s Counsel (PC) Romesh De Silva has been sent to the Legal Draftsman’s Department in order to ensure that the proper drafting procedure has been followed.
“The constitutional reform committee is nearing the end of their task. They have sent their draft to the Legal Draftsman’s Department in order to ensure that the proper drafting work has been adhered to. They have further informed us that the report will be ready to be handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa within a month,” Prof. Peiris said while addressing non-governmental organisations on 16 February. Prof. Peiris’s remarks were noted in a Foreign Ministry press release on the discussion held on 16 February.
Although the Government assured last year that a draft of the new Constitution will be presented to the Parliament by January 2022, it is yet to be done.
Meanwhile, seven Tamil political parties wrote to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, requesting him to urge the Government of Sri Lanka to fully implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
The nine-member expert committee was appointed in September 2020. Chaired by De Silva PC, its other members include Gamini Marapana PC, Manohara de Silva PC, Sanjeewa Jayawardena PC, Samantha Ratwatte PC, Dr. A. Sarveswaran, Prof. Wasantha Seneviratne, and Prof. G.L. Peiris.
