New crackdown on ransom and rape

By Dinitha Rathnayake   Police Media Spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) of Police Ajith Rohana, who was recently put in charge of Traffic and Crimes is set to commence fresh operations against incidents of seeking ransom, rape, and the harassment of children. Speaking to The Morning, he said that with the full support of the Public Security Ministry and the subject Minister Dr. Sarath Weerasekera, he would be able to launch special operations against these crimes within a few weeks. “We would use our full technical capacity to solve these issues and to take necessary steps to protect victims and witnesses.” Rohana officially took over duties as the SDIG in charge of Traffic and Crimes yesterday (8). The Crimes Division, the Police Narcotic Bureau, Traffic Control and Road Safety, the Naval and Tourist Division, Criminal Intelligence and Prevention Division, the Crime Reporting Division, the Police Kennels Division, the Child and Women Bureau, and the Victims of Crime and Witnesses Assistance and Protection Division will be under the purview of SDIG Rohana. Seven SDIGs were transferred with immediate effect on 3 July based on service requirements including Nandana Munasinghe – Administration, Rohana – Crimes and Traffic, Lalith Pathinayake – Community Policing and Environment, P.S.M. Dharmaratne – North Western Province and Acting in charge of the North Central Province, W.K. Jayalath – Northern Province, Ranmal Kodithuwakku – Acting in charge of the Uva Province, R.L. Daminda – Southern Province and N.L. Wijesena – the Anuradhapura Range.
