The Cabinet of Ministers, on 11 October, approved the drafting of the Defence Cyber Commands Act, which would also include provisions to establish a Cyber Protection Agency.
“It has been recognised that there are many aspects of national security which are directly affected by the cyber world. Thus, the Cabinet approved the formulation of cyber protection laws, and the establishment of the Sri Lanka Cyber Protection Agency,” Cabinet Spokesman Dullas Alahapperuma said at the weekly cabinet press briefing held yesterday (12).
According to the cabinet decisions, discussions between the Technology Ministry and the Defence Ministry have recognised the need for cyber protection laws due to the increasing influence that technology has on national security.
“New laws are formulated with the intention of creating a regulatory framework for implementing national information and cyber protection apart from those applicable to national defence, the formulation of provisions to establish the Sri Lanka Cyber Protection Agency to act with other co-operating agencies, the introduction of legal provisions required for protecting infrastructure facilities related to decisive and essential information within the country, the prevention of risk activities that affect cybersecurity, as well as creating a formal cyber-protected environment within the country,” the cabinet decision explained.
Attempts to contact Technology Ministry Secretary Jayantha De Silva proved futile.
Earlier this year, the Government announced that it would also introduce provisions to combat fake news online by the regulation of social media. However, Alahapperuma recently stated that the Government has now decided to hold discussions with the media, instead of looking to regulate social media.
