New diplomats to be appointed soon

12 Jan 2020

New diplomatic appointments to foreign missions that have been vacated after the new Government came into power, would be made in the next few days, The Sunday Morning learnt. Minister of Foreign Affairs Dinesh Gunawardena told The Sunday Morning that he expected the new diplomatic appointments to be made soon. “A number of ambassadors, high commissioners, and other diplomats were recalled and most have returned. I expect his Excellency the President to make appointments to fill these vacancies in the coming days,” he said. Soon after the new Government came into power, it recalled many diplomats whom they considered were political appointments made by the former UNP-led Government. “Some of these appointments were made during the election when it was prohibited to make political appointments,” Minister Gunawardena said, adding that only a select few were recalled by the incumbent Government. – Skandha Gunasekara
