The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) is planning to install microseismic equipment in certain areas, where tremors were frequently reported in recent times, in order to find the exact location of such tremors.
When contacted by The Morning to inquire about this, GSMB Chairman Anura Walpola said that 10 such equipment have been imported so far. Accordingly, the equipment will be located in the Lunugala area in Badulla and the Haragama area in Kandy where a number of tremors were reported during recent times.
He explained that although several tremors had been reported in the Lunugala and Haragama areas in the recent past, it had been decided to place said equipment in those areas due to the inability to identify the exact location of the tremors.
“This equipment will be able to accurately identify the location of the tremors and detect their potential impact, especially if reservoirs are affected by them,” he added.
On 16 June 2021, the Seismic Data and Tsunami Alert Centre (SDTAC) announced that a minor tremor was felt in the Lunugala area, off Passara. According to the SDTAC, it had been reported at around 4.39 p.m. and its magnitude on the Richter scale was reported to be between 1.8 and 2. Also, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) had reported then that several residents in the Lunugala area too had felt the tremor. However, no damages had been reported due to the tremor.
Another minor tremor, recording less than one point on the Richter scale, had been recorded in Ekiriya, Lunugala, at around 4.53 a.m. on 12 February 2021. In August 2020 and September 2020, several tremors had been reported in the Haragama area in Kandy.
