Sri Lanka’s migrant workers, who contribute immensely to the foreign exchange reserves in Sri Lanka, are to be provided an appropriate insurance scheme.
The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday (18) approved the relevant proposal made by Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The Foreign Employment Bureau currently provides an Overseas Labour Insurance Coverage for Sri Lankan employees. Under this, they are paid insurances subject to a maximum of Rs. 600,000 in case of an employee’s death, and Rs. 400,000 in case of total disability.
However, the Government has noted that these employees are offered no coverage for a variety of industrial accidents, access to medical care for mental and health problems due to various illnesses, and harassment by employers and job losses due to Covid-19, which the proposal aims to rectify.
