03 Jul 2021

  • No more interchanges/exit points for expressway: RDA

  • New Rs. 445 m interchange the final construction

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa   The Road Development Authority (RDA) has assured that there will be no more additional interchanges or exit points added to the Southern Expressway in the future.  RDA Director General L.V.S. Weerakoon told The Sunday Morning that the Kapuduwa interchange was the final addition made to the already constructed Southern Expressway.  “An interchange in Kapuduwa was in the initial plan of the Southern Expressway project,” he said, adding however that the changes made thereafter had omitted the interchange, and that the constructions had been completed without the Kapuduwa interchange.  According to the RDA, the total cost of the interchange was Rs. 445 million and the construction was completed within a year.   The Kapuduwa interchange is the second newest addition made to the Southern Expressway extension from Matara to Hambantota after it was officially opened in 2019.  The said extension was opened by the previous United National Front-led Government a few days prior to the presidential election held in November 2019, and was then closed for further constructions by the incumbent Government.  The section was once again opened for the public in February last year with an additional exit point at Bedigama, Weeraketiya, at a cost of around Rs. 20 million.  As per the RDA, the Matara to Hambantota stretch of the Southern Expressway has six interchanges, with one exit point at Bedigama.   The Southern Expressway is the first link of the expressway network planned in Sri Lanka. It traverses from Kottawa to Matara (126.1 km) and it was initially opened to the public from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa (95.3 km) in November 2011 while the extended section from Pinnaduwa to Godagama (30.8 km) was opened to the public in March 2014.
