New Monetary Board Secretary comes under SJB fire

BY Dinitha Rathnayake Main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Manusha Nanayakkara raised questions regarding the recent appointment of the Secretary to the Monetary Board. During the parliamentary session on 22 September, he alleged that the newly appointed Secretary was also involved in corrupt activities. “I am asking this question due to national interest. The new Secretary is also involved in corrupt activity where he misled the Monetary Board, and he was also involved in a disciplinary inquiry,” he alleged. However, at this juncture, Nanayakkara was unable to continue his questioning, as Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena did not allow him to proceed. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) announced the appointment of Assistant Governor J.P.R. Karunaratne as Secretary to the Monetary Board with effect from 15 September 2021. A few days ago, Assistant Governor K.M.A.N. Daulagala was relieved from her duties as Monetary Board Secretary. She had conducted an investigation into the financial misconduct of Edirisinghe Trust Investments (ETI).  Monetary Board Secretary Karunaratne was not available for immediate comment.
