New PCR testing laboratory opened: Capacity to conduct 500 tests daily

A new PCR testing laboratory with a capacity of 500 tests per day has been established at the Colombo East Base Hospital in Mulleriyawa with emergency funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), according to the Health Ministry.
The total cost of the laboratory is Rs. 250 million which has been provided by the ADB on a request made by Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi. The laboratory is equipped with the latest technology, including automated sample extractors.
The laboratory is capable of completing the testing of 96 samples within two hours and issuing a report within four hours.
The laboratory is also equipped with PCR machines, consumables, pharmacological refrigerators and freezers, generators, reagents, and dedicated utilities such as water supply, electricity, and telecommunication.
According to the Ministry, the new laboratory is the first of its kind in Sri Lanka with all the latest technology and in addition to the PCR tests, it has facilities to conduct tests for non-communicable diseases and cancers.
