New public school system within two years- PM

Pictures by Krishan Kariyawasam Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that within the next two years a new public school system will be implemented, one which is not based on language or religion. The Prime Minister expressed these next steps during his speech which was made at the National teaching diploma graduation ceremony yesterday (22). Further, the Premier stated that “all religious education institutes will be regulated under the purview of the Ministry of Education.” It has also been decided that Muslim religious education institutes will be monitored by a regulatory board under the purview of the Ministry of Education. The Prime Minister has also welcomed the ideas of others in the process of taking these decisions and formulation policies in the future as he stated that  “SLFP had already come up with some useful proposals and we expect a dialogue with other parties as well.” In addition, the Government will be introducing a Madrasa Schools Regulatory Bill which will result in all Madrasas being brought under Education Ministry purview while amending the University Act in order to ban Sharia Universities. The PM further stated that all international schools will also be brought under the purview of the Ministry of Education and they too will be introduced local syllabuses, additionally, studies will be conducted to observe and see whether the Singaporean education model could be implemented in Sri Lanka for the future.
