New restrictions on religious congregations

30 Apr 2021

Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Asela Gunawardena yesterday (29) said that certain restrictions will be imposed on all religious congregational activities until further notice due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that the maximum number allowed to gather at any place of worship is 25. Meanwhile, the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs has issued restrictions on Ramadan-related activities to ensure maximum protection against Covid-19. The Wakfs Board has decided to temporarily suspend Taraweeh (night prayers during Ramadan), Jummah prayers, and certain congregational activities in all mosques until further notice. They said that only 25 persons are allowed into a mosque at a time for the daily Jammat prayers, which are held five times per day. Meanwhile, all ablution areas in mosques are to be kept closed. The persons in charge have also been permitted to close the mosques if the relevant procedures have not been followed.
