A new Complaint Unit has been established under the Intelligence Security Unit of the Department of Prisons, enabling the public to lodge any complaints regarding irregularities and other shortcomings in prisons, Acting Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said.
He told The Morning that any person, whether an inmate, prison official, or outsider, could now lodge complaints with the newly established unit under the already existing Intelligence Security Unit.
The unit can be reached via the hotline 0112 678 600, Upuldeniya said, adding that 100% confidentiality will be maintained concerning the provided information.
Meanwhile, the Department has also transferred 23 prison officials including eight superintendents and 15 assistant superintendents in prisons around the country with immediate effect, Upuldeniya said.
The move was taken on the directives of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had called for rectifications in the Department recently.
Several other measures have also been taken to ensure the prevention of illegal activities within the prisons, he added.
