NMRA greenlights Sinovac vaccine

16 Jul 2021

The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has approved the emergency use of the Chinese Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine, State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana stated today (16). Accordingly, all vaccines approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) can now be used in Sri Lanka under the prevailing emergency conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier, sources told The Morning that the Independent Vaccine Advisory Expert Committee will approve the Chinese Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine only if it deems Sri Lanka to be in need of this vaccine in addition to all other vaccines currently available, and scheduled to arrive, in Sri Lanka. Further, it was learnt that at the time, since the country is already receiving stocks of a number of different vaccines, it is yet to be determined by the Committee as to whether there is a convincing need to administer the Sinovac vaccine to the Sri Lankan population.
