No change in policy of cremation of COVID victims’ bodies: Keheliya

Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella reiterated that there is no change in the current position regarding the cremation of those who died due to COVID-19. He was responding to a question raised by a journalist at teh Cabinet news briefing held at the Government Information Department today. The journalist raised concerns over a UN Human Rights Council report that stated that there was no evidence to say that COVID-19 virus spreads through buried bodies of COVID victims. Responding to this, the Minister said, “The government is following the methodology given by the health authorities in this regard. The government will have to take responsibility for the dangers in the country and it cannot deviate from the current methodology recommended by the experts in the medical field. We cannot take arbitrary decisions.” Accordingly, action will be taken in accordance with the decisions given by the relevant authorities in the medical field, the Minister said.
