17 Jul 2019

Cabinet has not decided to back the implementation of the death penalty, the Prime Minister's Office said. A spokesperson at the Prime Minister's Office told The Sunday Morning that the cabinet has not yet met for this week. The spokesperson said that cabinet is scheduled to meet on Friday and the death penalty is not part of the agenda. A Minister was quoted as saying cabinet has decided to support President Maithripala Sirisena's decision to execute four convicts on death row for serious drug related crimes.
