A decision to reopen the country’s airports for foreigners has not yet been made by the Government despite the earlier date set for the first week of August, The Morning learnt.
Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. (AASL) Chairman Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri said the Government had not yet decided when it should reopen the airports.
Earlier, the Government was planning to reopen the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Colombo and Mattala International Airport (MIA) in Hambantota for operations from 1 August to boost the country’s tourism industry following the Covid-19 pandemic.
As learnt by The Morning, the Government was weighing the possibilities to restart the repatriation of Sri Lankans from mid-August.
As per unofficial information, the repatriation programme is to recommence from 8 August and one flight per day is to land at BIA, The Morning learnt. About 700 Sri Lankans will be brought back to the country.
Accordingly, over 40,000 Sri Lankans are waiting to return to Sri Lanka and as of now around 12,000 have been repatriated.
