30 Mar 2021

Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila has stated that no policy decision has been taken to allow Indian fishermen to fish in Sri Lankan waters. He was responding to a question at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today (30). When asked by a journalist whether the government had taken a decision to allow Indian fishermen to fish in Sri Lanka, the Minister said that the Minister of Fisheries has not discussed any such decision. “The Cabinet has not received any such proposal so far,” he said. When inquired by the media about the release of Indian fishermen stranded in Sri Lankan waters and the detention of Sri Lankan fishermen so far by the Indian government, the Minister said that the government would intervene and release the Sri Lankan fishermen without any hesitation when they go fishing in other countries’ territorial waters. Gammanpila said that the same procedure was followed with regard to Indian fishermen and hoped that India would take such a positive step towards the Sri Lankan fishermen in Indian custody.
