No decline in testing, focus shifted to heavy RAT use says Health Ministry

21 Sep 2021

The allegation that the number of PCR tests conducted in the recent days being insufficient has been gaining traction. When Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr Hemantha Herath was confronted with this, he explained that it is due to a change in the testing strategy where more focus has been placed on the conduct of Rapid Antigen tests (RAT). “What we are using more right now is the RATs instead of PCR tests. As such, these tests are done in the field, at homes and in rural areas,” he said at a press conference held yesterday (20). Dr. Herath also added that the number of RATs conducted are not reported at a constant rate. “They are reported as ‘returns’ once a week or once a month,” he said. In terms of the number of RATs conducted on a daily basis, Dr Herath notes that the Medical Supply Unit of the Ministry of Health issues in excess of 30,000 RAT kits per day.
