No drastic action against media: Keheliya

The government does not believe in taking drastic action against media and the press release regarding the fake reports on deforestation and environmental destruction was distributed to make the media aware of the consequences of fake news, Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella told the Morning today (29).

“However, if fake reporting continues, we will have to take the case up with the Press Council,” he further stated.

Rambukwella said that the Press Council will then have a discussion with the particular media person or institution without imposing any penalties, as the government does not wish to restrict media freedom.
