No drought or dry weather: DMC

28 Sep 2020

Three hotlines from Disaster Management CenterBy Sarah Hannan The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) of Sri Lanka confirmed that no dry weather incidents or water shortages were recently reported following the heavy showers the country experienced over the past two weeks. DMC Spokesperson Pradeep Kodippili made this statement when The Morning contacted him to seek clarification on a news report that indicated over 30,000 people from the Polonnaruwa District were facing a drinking water shortage. “The heavy showers that the country experienced over the past week replenished the natural water sources in catchment areas and dispelled the dry weather conditions several areas faced in the past few weeks. At the moment, dry weather conditions haven’t been reported from anywhere in the country,” Kodippili explained. When asked about a recent provincial report on water scarcity stats that was shared, Kodippili noted that the reporter would’ve referred to historic data that was collated since January 2020.
