No drug shortage will be permitted: Keheliya

  • Sri Lanka to locally manufacture 50-60% of national medicines requirement by 2025
BY Buddhika Samaraweera  Claiming that steps would be taken to locally produce 50-60% of the pharmaceutical drugs required by the country by 2025, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated that no shortage of drugs would be allowed even in the midst of a global catastrophe. Speaking to the media in Galagedara, he said that the pharmaceutical manufacturing process in the country is going well and that there are plans to manufacture a variety of drugs, as well as medical equipment locally, for the country. “The establishment of pharmaceutical factories in Sri Lanka is a lucrative programme for investors. Therefore, the Government hopes to provide maximum facilities for the production of pharmaceuticals. By 2025, about 50% to 60% of the country’s pharmaceutical drugs requirement will be produced locally,” he claimed. Rambukwella further stated that at present, four pharmaceutical factories are being set up in the Anuradhapura area while work has commenced on a factory in Horana. In addition, he said that another pharmaceutical manufacturing zone would be established in Hambantota. However, the Sri Lanka Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry (SLCPI) on 2 March warned of a possible shortage of critical life saving drugs in the market within the next two to six weeks, given the foreign exchange crisis and in the absence of a fair pricing formula for pharmaceutical products.   Meanwhile, in response to reports to the effect that the country would see a shortage of certain pharmaceutical drugs, the Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Ministry stated last week that such a shortage could be prevented if the letters of credit (LCs) with regard to drug imports are issued based on the priority list of drugs which has been prepared at present. When contacted by The Morning to inquire about the matter, the Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Ministry Secretary, Dr. S.K. Rathnayake said: “We have now prepared a list of drugs that should be given priority when being imported. If LCs are issued according to that list, a shortage of drugs can be avoided. There will be an issue only if the LCs are not issued in that manner.”
