By Dinitha Rathnayake   Despite reports to the contrary, the cause of the flooding that occurred in low-lying areas of the Maha Oya valley in Alawwa, Diwulapitiya, Mirigama, and Pannala was not due to the construction of the Kadawatha-Mirigama section of the Central Expressway, according to the Road Development Authority (RDA). Despite reports to the contrary, the cause of the flooding that occurred in low-lying areas of the Maha Oya valley in Alawwa, Diwulapitiya, Mirigama, and Pannala was not due to the construction of the Kadawatha-Mirigama section of the Central Expressway, according to the Road Development Authority (RDA). He was responding to our queries about claims made by residents of Nambuluwa, Pasyala that the flood situation had occurred due to shortcomings in the highway construction, and that even the highway had been flooded. Speaking to The Morning, RDA Director General L.V.S. Weerakoon said that the authority rejects these allegations. “The flooding was not caused by the highway construction, and the highway was not flooded. Even if it was flooded, any highway would be flooded due to this heavy rainfall. This was flooding that occurred due to rain.” According to Weerakoon, bridges of the highway were well structured and built according to the safety measures. “However, we will get a report on the on-site situation and a special meeting will take place on Tuesday (8) related to this matter,” he added. He added that necessary action will be taken to prevent such a situation in future. Due to considerable rainfall exceeding around 100mm, minor flooding occurred in low lying areas of Maha Oya through Alawwa, Divulapitiya, Meerigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negombo, Katana, and Dankotuwa D/S Divisions on 5 May.
