No foreign monitors?

26 Apr 2020

It is highly unlikely that international observers would be brought down to monitor the parliamentary elections, The Sunday Morning learnt. Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake told The Sunday Morning that the Covid-19 situation wouldn’t make it possible to invite foreign election monitors. “There are no flights operating. Logistically alone, it would be impossible to get down international monitors,” he said. He added that even if logistics were not an issue, the availability of such monitors was in question. “Most of these monitors are engaged in other full-time jobs, so that too would be a restriction for us,” he added.
