There is no legal barrier for the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) to contest the forthcoming general elections, UNP member Sujeewa Senasinghe said today.
Senasinghe during a press briefing today said the Election Commission had legally accepted the new alliance as a political party.
Senasinghe’s statement comes after United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe told reporters on Sunday (1) that that there were several legal matters relating to the constitution of the new alliance.
President's Counsel Upul Jayasundara participating at today’s press briefing said, the constitution of the new alliance was drafted by a legal team comprising of over 15 lawyers and there were no legal barriers facing the alliance.
"The SJB was formed and registered with the approval of the UNP Working Committee."
“Amendments to the alliance’s constitution have been done according to a legal framework and that election commission has approved same,” Jayasundara pointed out.
