06 Nov 2021

Conditions imposed on consumers to purchase other items when purchasing essential goods from state-owned retailer Sathosa were removed yesterday (6).  Minister of Trade Dr. Bandula Gunawardana, speaking at a press conference, said that the conditions that were in place when purchasing essentials, such as sugar and rice, had been lifted with immediate effect. Minister Dr. Gunawardana stated that consumers could now purchase any number of goods without restriction, adding that the Ministry did not wish to violate the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act. He also stressed that the Government had the right to request the public to make certain purchases in a particular manner, but had decided not to do so.
