No need to quarantine families of Covid-19 positive Navy officers: PHIs

19 May 2020

Public health inspectors (PHIs) yesterday (18) assured that there was no need at present to quarantine the families of navy personnel who tested positive for Covid-19. PHI’s Union of Sri Lanka (PHIU) Treasurer D.Y.S.R.R. Mudalige said the navy personnel who were on leave were recalled on 27 April and since that day, more than two weeks had passed. Therefore, there was no possibility that the virus would spread to the families of those who tested positive for Covid-19. Therefore, the PHIU requested the public not to panic. The first case of Covid-19 among naval personnel was reported on 24 April and over 521 naval personnel have tested positive for Covid-19 so far while around 189 have already recovered. As explained by Mudalige, there was no possibility of the virus spreading through naval personnel as they are all confined in a separate place, and new cases were only reported from those places. Therefore, at present, there is no evidence to show that the virus is spreading within the community. However, the risk is still there and therefore it is important to take the necessary health precautions, he said. – Maheesha Mudugamuwa
