No new health guidelines for schools reopening today

19 Apr 2021

The schools that will reopen today (19) for an unusually long second term, after being closed for the Sinhala Tamil New Year holiday, will be required to adhere to the previously issued guidelines, as no new health guidelines have been issued since. “Schools are to follow the existing health guidelines, and we have communicated to all schools, including private schools registered with the Ministry of Education, that they can recommence their academic activities from tomorrow (19). No new health guidelines have been issued,” said Ministry of Education Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera speaking to The Morning yesterday (18). Washing hands, maintaining social distance, and bringing food from home are the basic health requirements, Prof. Perera told the media. However, when asked about today’s reopening of schools, Ceylon Teachers' Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin claimed that schools have not been sufficiently informed about reopening today. “A lack of planning from the part of the education authorities to reopen schools is apparent. Apart from a statement by the Minister of Education Prof. G.L. Peiris and a press release from Prof. Perera, there has been no other communication regarding reopening schools. This is a five-month-long school term, which is a unique situation, and no new guidelines have been issued for this.” He claimed that education authorities have not prepared a proper programme to ensure safety in schools. “There is no talk of giving facemasks to the students or vaccinating teachers,” he added. Attempts to contact Ministry of Education authorities to clarify the plan for a five-month term proved futile. The issued health guidelines stated that classes of 15 students must be held daily through the week and that classes with 16-30 students must be divided into two groups. The guidelines further stated that classes must be held every other week. Classes having more than 30 students must be divided into three groups, while classes must be held for an equal number of days. It must be ensured that students attend classes at least three days a week.
