No plans to oust Sampanthan: ITAK

11 Jul 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake   There is no move to oust Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R. Sampanthan from the party despite media claims to the contrary, former TNA MP and current Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) Leader Mavai Senathirajah told The Morning yesterday (11). When queried about media reports quoting Senathirajah as having stated that a politician from the East is attempting to assume leadership of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) by creating issues among its MPs, Senathirajah denied that he made any such statement to the media in Jaffna. “We were at a meeting with the High Commissioner of India Gopal Baglay at the India House in Colombo that day. These media reports claimed that I was commenting on this by addressing the media in Jaffna. How am I supposed to address the media in Jaffna while I’m in Colombo? These are all false reports.” According to Senathirajah, all parties combined with TNA are satisfied with the leadership of R. Sampanthan, and no member in the coalition has issues with his leadership. When asked if there is anyone who may want to create issues within or outside the party, he replied: “No, there is no one.” Mavai Senathirajah and TNA MPs Dharmalingam Siddharthan, Selvam Adaikalanathan, and M.A. Sumanthiran were present at the meeting with the High Commissioner. The meeting saw discussions on the development of the North and East of Sri Lanka, and improving connectivity between the two countries in the post-Covid period. The High Commissioner had stressed India’s longstanding commitment towards creating social infrastructure such as housing in Sri Lanka, which enabled all Sri Lankans including the people from the Northern and Eastern Provinces, to enjoy the fruits of peace. He had reiterated Indian support for rehabilitation and development in areas such as connectivity, health, and education. Various aspects of devolution and developmental aspirations of the people from the North and East had also been discussed. The TNA delegation apprised the High Commissioner on progress regarding the Provincial Council elections, which constitute an integral part of Sri Lankan polity and its Constitution. The High Commissioner had reiterated India’s support for devolution within the framework of a united Sri Lanka on the basis of full implementation of the 13A, which would be in line with Tamil aspirations for equality, justice, peace, and reconciliation, and would strengthen Sri Lanka.
