Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Rathnayake yesterday (24) said that steps will be taken to change the names of the already registered parties that have religious references or connotations in their names.
Although yet to be confirmed, it is likely that political parties such as the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) would be affected by this new restriction.
Furthermore, the Election Commission (EC) will henceforth only register parties with names related to politics, and not parties with names containing religious and cultural references.
“It is not proper for the country to have a large number of political parties with religious names. This is about politics, which should be devoid of any bias towards culture or religion,” he told The Morning.
He said that the parties that wish to register with the Commission should ensure that the name of the party is related to politics and not religion.
