No power cuts or electricity price hikes: Lokuge

16 Nov 2021

There will be no power cuts and the supply of electricity will continue as it always has confirms Minister of Power Gamini Lokuge. He made this statement while speaking to the media yesterday (15). "There is no issue when it comes to electricity. We have the capacity to provide electricity and we will not increase the price of it either. Sapugaskanda has been closed, but this year we are running on 50% hydro power and 50% coal power. We have enough of coal. The losses incurred last year from electricity was Rs 35 billion, but we have brought it down to Rs 5 billion," said Lokuge. Lokuge went on to say that the current economic situation in the country is due to the Covid pandemic, and the way forward would be to bring in more tourism and other forms of foreign exchange into the country as Sri Lanka had always earned from tourism and trade.
