No power cuts until 18 January: Power Minister

17 Jan 2022

Minister of Power Gamini Lokuge assured the public that there would be no power cuts imposed until tomorrow (18). Speaking to reporters yesterday (16), Minister Lokuge stated that scheduled power cuts would not be necessary for the time being, as the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has supplied 3,000 metric tonnes (MT) of fuel to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). “We have received 3,000 MT of oil to the Kelanitissa plant. Accordingly, we will be able to operate until 18 January without electricity disruptions,” he said. The Minister said that further talks are expected to be held with the CPC today (17) to request the supply of fuel necessary to carry on until 22 January, adding that this was  “because we inform the CPC of the amount of oil required by the CEB annually”. The Sunday Morning reported yesterday that issues had arisen between the CEB and the CPC, with the CEB blaming the CPC for uncertainties in the power supply, while a senior government official had explained that the CEB had failed to inform the CPC of its diesel requirements even after islandwide power outages occurred during the previous week due to a lack of furnace oil.
