Gas cylinder can be sold at Rs. 950: Ravi K By Skandha Gunasekara The Government won’t reduce LP gas prices despite the possibility of reducing the price to as low as Rs. 950 for the 2.3 kg cylinder, shared former Finance Minister and United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake, speaking to The Morning. Government Spokesman and former State Minister of Investment Promotion Keheliya Rambukwella said that similar to fuel, LP gas prices would not be reduced. “Despite the global prices dropping, we do not want to reduce gas prices. Instead, we want to use the profits for other government expenses. This is much like what we did with petrol. We were able to use money saved from that to provide the Rs. 5,000 vouchers during the Covid-19 lockdown,” he said. He said that reducing gas prices would not have an impact on the overall cost of living. “Gas is bought only by 18% of the population and half of that comprise hotels and restaurants. Therefore, reducing gas prices won’t reduce the cost of living. So it’s better for the Government to utilise the profits for other expenses,” Rambukwella said. Former Finance Minister and United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake said that a 2.3 kg cylinder of gas could be sold at Rs. 950. “As per the costings that are available and the purchase prices, the price of gas can be brought down to Rs. 950,” he said. He noted that the last reduction was done during his tenure as Finance Minister. At present, a 2.3 kg cylinder of LP gas is priced at Rs. 2,765.
